Clean It Up “Start with a low-pressure house wash, then pressure-wash your walkways and driveway. If you truly want your home to sparkle and stand out, have your windows professionally cleaned, inside and out. If you’re selling you home or you want a big “wow” factor for a specific event, remove the screens on the front of your home as a finishing touch. Your home will have better curb appeal and will invite people to walk inside and check out the interior.” —Mike Boone, Window Genie
On the Level“For homes older than about 8 years, it is particularly important to pay attention to the pathways leading to the house. From driveways and walkways to steps and porches, these structures can become unlevel over time, settling out of place. There are implications beyond just the aesthetics, too: safety, liability and correct water flow (away from your homes’ foundation) need to be considered. HD polyurethane injection, also known as polyurethane foam lifting, is the most current method of repair to correct these situations, thereby preventing costly replacement.” —Willard Hooton, ExactJack
Trim and Proper“Make sure your garden beds are neat and presentable. Spruce up ornamental grasses and hostas by removing dead leaves. If you haven’t already done so, go out to the street and make sure that no shrubs or low-hanging tree branches block the view of your home: a clear look at the house is important. Also, buy some colorful pots and fill them with vibrant flowers. Finally, add a dark colorful mulch to your garden beds.” —Rudy Bohorquez, Luxury Living Scapes Inc.
Facelift“An exterior facelift—including new paint, siding or trim details—automatically transforms the look of a home and gives great curb appeal. The color coordination needs to stand out, but in a good way. Don’t overdo it, though; you want a calm, relaxed and clean look. Remember that periodic maintenance of that exterior surface is the surest way to keep your home and its curb appeal looking its best.” —Ed Ramadan, S&A Construction
Divine Doors“Update your garage door! If you have a front-facing garage, it can make up over 40 percent of the front of your home, dominating your curb appeal. Also, replacing your garage door can increase your home’s value by up to 4 percent, putting it in the top five projects for return on investment by Remodeling magazine. Another project in the top five is replacing your front entry door. As the focal point of many homes, front entry doors now come in beautiful wood-look options without the maintenance of wood. ” —Christopher C. Baron, Custom Door & Gate
Refresh Your Garage Door“For less than $100, black decorative hardware can dress up almost any garage door, new or old, raised panel, flush or carriage style. It’s like accessorizing your garage door with jewelry. Another inexpensive way to boost curb appeal is to add decorative windows to your garage door. In most cases, just the top section can be replaced.” —Paul Densmore, Overhead Door Company of Raleigh Inc.
